TAMPA -- Rapper Julio Foolio was killed, and three other people were wounded, in a shooting in a hotel parking lot early Sunday that police believe could have been retaliation.
The musician, whose legal name was Charles Jones, was “reportedly ambushed” in the hotel car park, his lawyer, Lewis Fusco, said in a statement, quoted by
The Jacksonville rapper, 26, was celebrating his birthday at an Airbnb property in Tampa until he was forced to relocate because he and his guests exceeded occupancy limits, CBS said.
Foolio, posting material to his Instagram account, said that police had “shut us down.”
That’s when he went to the Holiday Inn where his lawyer said he was ambushed.
Tampa police said two cars were hit in the shooting that took place at about 4:40 a.m. The three others who were injured were taken to hospital, where their condition was described as stable.
Foolio, has nearly a million monthly listeners on Spotify, where his top-played track is Voo Doo, the BBC said.
As recently as April, he wrote in an Instagram post that recent months had been “tragic”, citing “multiple attempts on my life”.
He is said to have been open about his gang affiliations, the BBC said, citing local media.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters on Monday said he has told his staff and others to pay close attention to certain groups that he knows are clashing.
“We’re not going to allow you to just arbitrarily run around and spray bullets into people’s houses and cars...We’re not going to tolerate any retribution, any revenge. We’re going to watch. We’re going to be around paying attention to what’s going on,” Waters said in a news conference, News4JAZ TV reported.
Waters said he would not mention the groups involved, but 4JAZ said KTA, a group associated with Julio Foolio, and ATK, whose most well-known affiliate is rapper Yungeen Ace, are rivals. Previously, the news station said, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer has stated the two groups aren’t just rivals in music, they also are enemies in the streets.
